Effective date: September 26, 2026
Pass the Notebook is a shared notebook you keep with people you choose. This policy explains where your writing lives, who can see it, and what the developer can and cannot access.
Pass the Notebook has no accounts of its own, no analytics, no advertising, no third-party tracking, and no third-party software libraries of any kind. Nothing you write is sent to any server the developer operates, because there is no such server. The developer cannot read your notebooks.
Your notebooks sync through your own iCloud account, using Apple's CloudKit framework. When you share a notebook, Apple's CloudKit sharing delivers it to the people you invite, and it is stored in the participants' iCloud accounts. Your content is handled by Apple under the Apple Privacy Policy and Apple's iCloud terms.
Your notebook content is protected by Apple's standard iCloud encryption, in transit and at rest. It is not end-to-end encrypted by this app, and this app does not claim to be. If you have Apple's Advanced Data Protection turned on for your iCloud account, your iCloud data receives stronger end-to-end protection under Apple's terms — that is a feature of your Apple account, not of this app.
We would rather say this precisely than advertise a guarantee we do not implement.
A shared notebook is shared. Everyone you invite can see the entries, photos, handwritten notes, poll votes, and the display name you chose. Apple's sharing interface also shows participants to one another. Please treat a notebook as you would a physical one passed around a room.
Members can export a notebook they belong to as a PDF, unless the notebook's owner has turned member exports off in the notebook's settings. A PDF someone has already exported is their own file: deleting the notebook removes it from iCloud and from everyone's app, but it cannot reach copies people saved outside the app, such as PDFs or screenshots.
Pass the Notebook does not access Apple Health and requests no Health permission.
You can report an entry or block a member from inside the app. Blocking and hiding are stored only on your device; the person you block is not told. A report opens as an email from you to the developer, containing the details shown on the report screen (including the reported entry's text), and is used only to respond to the report. Because notebooks live in their members' iCloud accounts, the developer cannot see or remove notebook content; a notebook's owner and managers can remove entries, and its owner can remove members.
Photos you add to an entry come from your photo library or your camera, with your permission, and become part of that entry in your iCloud. Saving a photo out of a notebook writes it to your own photo library. The app does not scan, index, or upload your photo library.
Notifications — new entries, pings, and the optional daily prompt — are local notifications scheduled on your own device from data already synced to it. No notification content is sent through the developer.
The Pro upgrade is processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. The developer never sees your payment details. Purchase records are managed by Apple.
The app collects no personal information from anyone, including children. Because a shared notebook shows content to everyone invited to it, we recommend that a parent or guardian decide who a child shares a notebook with.
Deleting a notebook removes it from iCloud for everyone it was shared with, subject to the copies described above. Deleting the app removes its local data from that device. Your iCloud data can also be managed in Settings → your name → iCloud.
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
